Tommy's Story Through Photos

Photo Gallery - Ministry of Tommy Scott Gilmore

The following pictures capture some memorable people and places from the ministry of Tommy Scott Gilmore.

Tommy’s encounter with a living God began during a Fellowship of Christian Athletes Conference held at Blue Ridge Assembly in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina.

Tommy returned to the place of his ordination, First Baptist Church of Asheville NC as their new Associate Pastor.

The interior of Asheville's First Baptist Church: Tommy was given the privilege & responsibility of directing all aspects of the Sunday evening service. Through creativity, prayer, continuous recruiting & training of volunteers and strong biblical preaching there was a 400% increase during at the Sunday evening service with Tommy preaching.

God expanded Tommy’s influence beyond the walls of First Baptist through speaking at high school assemblies, local universities, athletic banquets, civic clubs, and on television and radio. Also with the assistance of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association Tommy held city wide area concerts in which many people came forward giving their lives to Jesus Christ.

Tommy had always viewed Asheville as his version of Camelot. He had accepted Christ here, learned of spirit-filled living, influenced hundreds of lives, received numerous honors, fallen in love with a beautiful southern bell, proposed to this incredible girl from South Carolina and now found himself confused, saddened and excited all at same time. He and his bride to be were off to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Tommy had heard of this opportunity through his friendship with several Billy Graham Evangelistic Association staff members and board members. Tommy has always been a visionary and strategist and was excited about launching a new chapter in his ministry on the heels of Dr. Billy Graham's conducting an evangelistic crusade for the Maritimes.

Rev. Tommy Scott Gilmore became the Senior Pastor of the respected and historic West End Baptist Church of Halifax.

Halifax is Eastern Canada’s most popular port of entry. It was also the home of Dalhousie University. It offered a great opportunity to minister around the world from the walls of our sanctuary. We frequently drew 100+ foreign exchange students to our foreign student socials.

What God did within our congregation was amazing as we drew from every imaginable segment of society from:

  • Politicians to policeman to prisoners to prostitutes
  • Billy Graham’s Canadian staff
  • Ada McCallum (Most famous Madame of all of Canada)
  • Exemplary spiritual families to notorious drug dealers
  • World Heavyweight Boxing Champ Trevor Berbick, who defeated Muhammad Ali

ONE OF THE GREATEST THRILLS OF MY LIFE WAS WHEN I MET DR. OSWALD SMITH & HIS SON PAUL, PASTORS OF THE PEOPLES CHURCH OF TORONTO, IN THE PROVINCE OF ONTARIO, CANADA.

  • Dr. Oswald J. Smith preached over 12,000 sermons
  • Founder of The Peoples Church
  • One of the world’s greatest missionary churches
  • Received by Queen Elizabeth
  • Husband of Daisy and father of three children
  • Author of 35 books, published in 128 languages
  • Wrote over 1200 hymns, poems and gospel songs
  • Led his church in supporting over 500 missionaries
  • Preached the gospel on radio & TV for over three decades
  • Toured 80 countries & held evangelistic crusades worldwide

Dr. Paul B. Smith, Senior Pastor of The People's Church from 1959–1994, said this about Tommy: "The Rev. Tommy Scott Gilmore has preached in the main Sunday services of the Peoples Church and his ministry was most effective. He is an articulate speaker, has enormous personal charisma, and is deeply spiritual. I could recommend him without reservations to any church, group of churches, or Christian organization that is interested in having a forthright and talented preacher minister amongst them."

Our time in Halifax could be best described as experiencing so much, so fast in ways that were so fulfilling, so challenging, so happy, so sad, so good and so difficult in so many ways. Memories we will never forget.

We were headed home to the Greenville / Spartanburg area of South Carolina

The how’s & why’s of how I joined the staff of First Baptist of North Spartanburg, SCwas truly one of those God things. At that time we were the fastest growing churches in the state.

Despite incredible success in our singles ministry and heading up city-wide evangelistic outreaches and church-wide discipleship programs we found our self-following God’s lead to head to the state that just elected a new governor by the name of Bill Clinton.

LITTLE ROCK – HERE WE COME!!!!!

Metropolitan Little Rock, Arkansas includes Conway. The population of this area is 886,992.

FISHING, HUNTING, COLLEGE FOOTBALL, SIGHTSEEING, GREAT FRIENDSHIPS & GOOD EATING WERE THINGS WE ENJOYED, APPRECIATED & WILL NEVER FORGET.

LAKE CONWAY IS A FISHERMAN’S PARADISE

GOD BLESSED OUR MINISTRY AT FBC OF CONWAY TO PARENTS, CHILDREN & TEENAGERS AS WE SHARED GOD’S LOVE IN MANY CREATIVE & TRADITIONAL WAYS.

Coach Holtz graciously reached out to our student ministry in allowing several All-Americans to speak to our students.

It was a fun place for Tommy & Sandra to live until as unfortunately happens in so many churches – a church split.

It was very hard on us as God had so blessed our ministry and was allowing us to have an impact throughout the state when we joined forces with several other successful ministries led by such men as Rick Caldwell, Hess Hester, Tierce Green, Joe White of Kamp Kanakuk (Branson, Missouri).

NEXT STOP > MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA

TODAY’S FORECAST: SNOW. TOMORROW: MORE SNOW.

Grace Church of Edina, MN: HAD 54 PASTORAL STAFF WHEN I SERVED AS THEIR PASTOR TO SINGLE ADULTS. THEY ARE NOW GRACE CHURCH OF EDEN PRARIE, MN.

Our Single Adult ministry grew to become the largest in Minnesota.

Tommy was blessed to serve as Pastor of Christian Education at Rainbow Forest Baptist Church, Roanoke, Virginia

NEVER IN OUR WILDEST IMAGINATION DID WE EVER ANTICIPATE WHAT GOD HAD IN STORE FOR US & OUR MINISTRY IN RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA.

RALEIGH - THE CAPITAL OF NORTH CAROLINA

OUR STUDENT MINISTRY GREW from 12 middle school students, 25 senior high students and 20 adult volunteers to a weekly average of 250 senior high students, 60 middle school students, a weekly orbit of 1200 students, 6 annual adult interns, and 150 adult volunteers.

The greatest compliment was the kudos we received from some of America’s top church consultants who stated our student ministry had some of the most spiritually mature students they had ever met in all their years of church consulting.

While at Crossroads in Raleigh, Changing Lives Ministry hosted several city-wide outreach events, attracting thousands of students.

Although I received a weekly paycheck from Crossroads Fellowship as their Director of Student Ministries. The vision God gave me was much greater than just ministering to the students at the church I served. I will always be grateful that my Senior pastor and the church's ruling elders applauded my efforts to fulfill the vision God had given me.

Thet encouraged me to pursue the vision which God had planted within my heart “to develop an exciting, dynamic, spiritually powerful student ministry characterized by spirit-initiated life change to…

Our Jerusalem was to spiritually impact the lives of the students & parents of Crossroads fellowship

Our Judea was to spiritually impact the lives of the students & parents throughout North Carolina

Our Samaria was to spiritually impact the lives of the students & parents primarily throughout the Southeastern United States and beyond when opportunities existed

Our Uttermost was to spiritually impact the lives of the students & parents in the foreign countries we visited.

I ministered to students on nearly every campus in the Raleigh / Durham / Chapel Hill area. God also opened opportunities to minister through individuals like UNC Head Football Coach Mack Brown, UNC Associate Athletic Director John Lotz, Basketball HOF player David Thomson and the daughter of NCSU Basketball Coach Jim Valvano> Tommy spoke on several occasions to the football players at UNC & NCSU. The NCSU basketball and cheerleading team and numerous individual athletes from Duke University frequently ministered with Tommy at creative outreach ministries to students

Once again, we experienced a church split after 8 glorious years. A staff member made a mistake that affected a lot of lives of people whom we loved, our family in particular. The response of many people was what you would expect from humans, and what we tend to do as humans – mistrust, accusations, pointing of fingers and a misunderstanding of grace. Although we were never the cause or even slightly connected with the incident, our lives were forever changed. My wife & children were deeply saddened and forever affected.

LESSON LEARNED: No one ever wins when we sin. When we fail to listen, trust or obey God, bad things happen – sometimes sooner, sometimes later but they WILL HAPPEN.

In some way God allowed us to minister to every segment of Tallahassee life to FSU football coaches & players, to lawyers & politicians to businessmen to skate boarders to the homeless to students & their families. What a blessing!

Although our time here was short, it was indeed successful. Many lives were changed as we faithfully obeyed, even when we did NOT understand or wondered – WHY GOD ?

I quickly learned 2 things about living in Boca Raton:

  1. It was unlike anywhere I had ever lived or ministered
  2. Everyone – even the rich & famous NEED THE LORD

NOT YOUR TYPICAL NEIGHBORHOOD

Opulence is visible everywhere in Palm Beach County

Spanish River Church is unique in who it ministers to…

Every Sunday 3 worship services are scheduled at SRC. Tommy was a frequent speaker who made the Scriptures come alive, scratching where seekers spiritually itched.
