What the Bible Says About Poverty

In the Bible, God speaks often of the poor and needy. He commands us to give generously to them and to speak up on their behalf.

To help you connect with God's heart for the poor, we have compiled this list of Bible verses that speak to how He asks us to relate to and serve the less fortunate among us.

  • All of the Bible references are from the New International Version.

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.  - Proverbs 31:8-9

Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court, for the Lord will take up their case and will exact life for life.  — Proverbs 22:22-23

Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due when it is in your power to act. Do not say to your neighbor, "Come back tomorrow and I’ll give it to you"—when you already have it with you.  — Proverbs 3:27-28

A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. — Proverbs 11:25

MOTHER THERESA  - DEFINITION OF POVERTY

Mother Theresa's definition of poverty should cause us to look deep within our own heart, asking the question - Are we eliminating poverty or fertilizing it?

We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own lives to remedy this kind of poverty.

Our Generation Loves to Communicate

Let’s face it our contemporary society loves to communicate with old & new friends around the world through various social media like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and more. The staff at CLM is no different. We love to talk to friends, sharing the good times and encouraging them through the bad.

Some of us have been blessed with families and friends who are always there when needed. A few days ago a neighbor whom I loved and respected deeply suddenly passed away. Everyone was shocked beyond belief; Jim Hart's charm, wit, laughter, and love for everyone he met would no longer be on display in this world. The fact is, no one can guarantee our loved ones will always be there when we need them.

Only Jesus said: I will never leave you nor forsake you. Jesus is only a prayer away. He is always ready and willing to accept us, forgive us and love us. His arms are always ready to welcome us back into the family of Christians.  Have you ever experienced that type of love?

HAVE YOU EVER EXPERIENCED THAT TYPE OF LOVE?

PEOPLE NEED THE LORD
People everywhere -- rich or poor, young or old -- need the Lord
No matter what you did
No matter when you did it
No matter how often you did it
Jesus Christ says again and again:
I will always love you.
I will always be there for you.
I will always forgive you.
I will always believe in you.

We can help you know him personally. Our prayer ministry exists to help you do that. Our online prayer ministry also allows us to pray for you and allows you to pray for us. Prayer is simply a conversation between Christ-followers communicating with God by speaking & listening. Prayer is the means by which we bring our requests and needs to God. It is also one of the means by which God gives us instruction on how to grow spiritually and know Him better.

Billy Graham's Final Public Prayer for the World

This final prayer was shared in the celebration of Graham’s 99th birthday on Nov. 7, 2017. Rev. Billy Graham’s son, Franklin Graham,  featuring these wise words from his father. The following is a prayer that the world will experience a spiritual awakening, and dedicate their lives to God:

“ I've been praying that we might have a spiritual awakening. I think that becomes possible only as individuals surrender their lives a fresh and a new to Christ.

First, we must do everything we can to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Live a life in which we love one another, we help one another, and we live according to His word as Jesus lived.

The Holy Spirit is the one who helps us live that new lifestyle. It’s one of love, gentleness, and patience and all of these things that are the fruits of the Spirit.

You read his Word every day… the Bible. I know it's very difficult but you need to start somewhere and I suggest you start with the Gospel of Luke in the New Testament and in the Old Testament starting with the first verse -- “In the Beginning, God.”

Go to your knees and pray until you and God have become intimate friends. I cannot describe to you the joy and the peace he gives as a result of the daily routine that you have.  Amen
